The appeal of unripe fruit

The Atlantic¬†magazine has an interesting examination of the Lebanese obsession with unripe fruit – one of the more unusual aspects of visiting the green grocer here.¬†You can get absolutely fantastic strawberries, cherries and apricots (“mish mish” in Arabic) when they’re in season, but some of the other fruits like lowz are just plain weird…

    Having read the article I think the truth of the matter lies somewhere between the four guys who hesitantly said they liked unripe fruit because of nationalistic pride and the lady who admitted it helped her diet. Anyone who has had stomach ache (collywobbles) from eating unripe fruit or vicious sbd wind knows you’d have to be nuts to partake more than once.
